Acclaimed by the worldwide medical community as the standard-setting
oncology reference, Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology is now
in its Sixth Edition. This thoroughly revised and updated classic
reflects the latest breakthroughs in every aspect of oncology, from
molecular biology, to multimodality treatment, to new data on cancer
prevention by drugs and diet.
This edition places increased emphasis on the role of molecular
biology in cancer diagnosis and treatment. In light of the growing
clinical importance of biological therapy, a new section on
Pharmacology of Cancer Biotherapeutics has been added. Chapters
describe new radiotherapy techniques such as intensity-modulated
radiation therapy and innovative surgical techniques such as
radiofrequency ablation of tumors, isolation-perfusion for visceral
cancers, and image-guided surgery. Rehabilitation is integrated into
each of this edition’s chapters on organ-specific cancers. Also
included are new chapters on information systems in oncology,
particularly on accessing information from the World Wide Web.
This edition now includes a CD-ROM bound into the book. The CD-ROM has
advanced search capabilities and gives you full text, high-quality
video and color slides not found in the book, direct links to PubMed,
and links to our new oncology portal, LWWoncology.com . The CD-ROM is
also available separately.
From a review of this edition:
"The new edition of the estimable "DeVita" is at hand and amounts to a
one-volume encyclopedia of basic and clinical research on the complex
disease we call cancer as well as an exhaustive analysis of the
various clinical entities. A new edition appears about every five
years and incorporates progress during the interim. But in a disease
for which research findings and clinical discoveries seem to change
almost daily, it seems to this reviewer that no single text (or set of
volumes) can be other than a work in progress. . .to combat oncologic
obsolescence, the editors deliver monthly updates via Internet
subscription as well as published progress reports.
This edition includes a CD-ROM, which saves lugging around a 10-lb
tome. . . Any who doubt that expertise in cancer knowledge requires a
narrow focus need only look at the number of individual contributors
(319 in all) and the depth of their expertise. Full marks to the
editors for collating these contributions into a compendium of
knowledge. It is gratifying to behold all this assembled knowledge in
one place.
As for the text itself, several succinct chapters on the bioscience of
cancer research constitute a worthwhile introduction to such topics as
genetic background, signal transduction, and the fascinating story of
cancer immunology.
The clinical chapters have been fair and balanced in their
consideration of competing modalities of treatment from the first
edition through all subsequent ones, which has been one of the
strongest reasons for the text’s widespread acceptance. That approach
makes a powerful statement to the cancer specialist that we’re all in
this together.
Once again it is time to give this work the kudos it deserves: it is
the ultimate authority on cancer in the English language."
